In a world filled with harsh detergents, synthetic fragrances, and hidden toxins, it’s refreshing to return to simplicity — to care for our families and homes the way God intended. Our clothes touch our skin every day, and what we use to clean them matters.
This gentle, all-natural laundry detergent combines powerful, God-made ingredients that truly get the job done — without the chemicals. It’s budget-friendly, easy to make, and leaves your laundry fresh, clean, and safe for even the most sensitive skin.
✝️ Scripture Inspiration
“She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.”— Proverbs 31:17 (NIV)
Just like the Proverbs 31 woman, we’re called to care for our homes with wisdom and diligence — and sometimes that begins with something as simple as a clean load of laundry.
DIY Laundry Detergent
Natural • Simple • Effective
Ingredients (Bulk Batch):
1 box Super Washing Soda
1 box Borax
4 bars Laundry Soap (such as Fels-Naptha)
Optional
½–1 cup Epsom Salt (optional for softness)
1 box baking soda
40–60 drops doTERRA Essential Oils — choose your favorites:
🌿 Purify – for freshness
🌸 Lavender – for gentle cleansing
🍋 Lemon – for bright whites
🌲 Tea Tree – for tough odors
🧼 Instructions:
Using a Cuisinart mixer with the grater attachment, grate all 4 bars of soap.(If you don’t have a mixer with an attachment, you can grate the soap by hand using a cheese grater—it works just as well!)
In a large bowl or bucket, combine the super washing soda, Borax, and laundry soap.
Pour the grated soap into the grater again—this time with the dry mixture—to grate it even finer and help everything blend together.
As you regrate, add your essential oils directly into the mix. This helps distribute the scent evenly throughout the powder.
Store in an airtight container or glass jar.
🫧 To Use:
Add 2 tablespoons per regular load (1 tablespoon for HE machines).
Since we have hard water, I use 1/4 cup
For extra softness and freshness, add ½ cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle.
💧 Feathered Essentials Tip:
Add a few drops of essential oil to wool dryer balls before drying for long-lasting, chemical-free freshness.
✨ A Little Reflection
I used to add OxiClean to my DIY laundry detergent, but after learning more, I decided to keep it simple and skip it next time. The natural ingredients God provided—washing soda, baking soda, and essential oils—work beautifully on their own! Sometimes, simple really is best.
If you find that your skin is sensitive to Borax, I recommend trying doTERRA Onguard laundry detergent.
