Chickweed Recipes

Chickweed is one of the easiest and most overlooked plants growing right in our yards.

Soft, delicate, and packed with nutrients, it’s often one of the first “weeds” people feel confident using.

And the best part?

It doesn’t take much to turn it into something useful.

🌱 What is Chickweed?

Chickweed is a low-growing plant with:

  • Small white star-shaped flowers

  • Tender green leaves

  • A mild, almost spinach-like taste

It thrives in cooler seasons here in Central Illinois and is often found in gardens, lawns, and along edges.

🌿 Why Use Chickweed?

Traditionally, chickweed has been used for:

  • Soothing irritated skin

  • Cooling inflammation

  • Supporting healing for minor cuts and rashes

It’s gentle enough for beginners and versatile enough for everyday use.

🧴 Chickweed Healing Salve (Simple & Practical)

This is one of the best ways to start using chickweed—especially for your Feathered Essentials side 👀

🛒 Ingredients

  • 1–2 cups fresh chickweed

  • 1 cup olive oil

  • 1 oz beeswax

Optional:

  • Lavender essential oil (skin soothing)

  • Frankincense (healing support)

🥣 Step 1: Dry the Chickweed

⚠️ This step matters.

  • Lay chickweed out for 24–48 hours

  • Let it wilt to remove moisture

👉 This prevents mold in your oil

🔥 Step 2: Infuse the Oil

  • Place chickweed in a jar

  • Cover completely with olive oil

  • Let sit 1–2 weeks

OR quick method:

  • Warm on low heat (double boiler) for 2–3 hours

🧈 Step 3: Make the Salve

  • Strain out plant material

  • Heat infused oil gently

  • Add beeswax

  • Stir until melted

👉 Pour into small jars and let cool

💡 How to Use

Apply to:

  • Bug bites

🙏 Faith Reflection

Chickweed grows low to the ground.

Easy to step over. Easy to ignore.

But it still serves a purpose.

Sometimes the things we overlook the most…are the very things God intended to meet our needs.
