More Than Martial Arts

Some places teach kids how to throw a punch.

Ugottawanna Mixed Martial Arts in Petersburg teaches kids how to stand strong.

Over the past several months, we've watched Buddy and Sis grow under the guidance of Mr. Buck Cunningham and Mrs. Kara Cunningham, and we couldn't be more grateful. Their school is about so much more than martial arts. Every class is an opportunity to build confidence, character, discipline, and respect.

One of the things we appreciate most is that belt promotions are earned—not given.

Every stripe, every belt, and every achievement represents hours of practice, perseverance, and determination. Kids learn that success doesn't come from simply showing up; it comes from working hard, listening well, and refusing to quit.

That lesson alone is worth its weight in gold.

Building More Than Fighters

Walking into Ugottawanna, you'll quickly realize the goal isn't to create bullies—it's to create protectors.

The Cunninghams teach children:

  • Self-defense with confidence

  • Mental toughness

  • Self-control

  • Respect for others

  • Discipline

  • Goal setting

  • Perseverance through challenges

Those are life skills our kids will carry long after they've outgrown their uniforms.

Watching Buddy & Sis Grow

It has been incredible watching Buddy and Sis participate in class.

There were moments of uncertainty when they first started. Now we see growing confidence, smiling faces, and a willingness to try hard things. Whether they're practicing techniques, listening carefully to instruction, or proudly earning the next step in their journey, it's obvious they're becoming stronger both mentally and physically.

As foster parents, those moments mean everything.

Thank You, Mr. & Mrs. C

Buck and Kara have created something special.

Their love for kids shines through every class, and they genuinely care about helping each student become the best version of themselves—not just as martial artists, but as young men and women of character.

We are thankful our family gets to be part of the Ugottawanna family.

If you're looking for a place where your child can gain confidence, learn discipline, make friends, and develop the skills to protect themselves while growing in character, we highly recommend checking them out.
